GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather Blessing abound in today’s readings!  Jeremiah laments how the one who “trusts in man,” will be cursed, but sees the one who “trusts in the Lord,” to be like a tree planted with abundant water that “does not cease to bear fruit.”  As Gods children we are “planted,”—a passive verb, by His grace into His love!  Luke records Jesus’ preaching using beatitudes.  In His teaching Jesus shares that we, His hearers, should rejoice and leap for joy, for our reward is great in heaven.  His Grace which gives us victory and hope!  No wonder Paul warns those who doubt Christ’s resurrection.  Today our worship is full of rejoicing and praise because our Savior rose from the dead as the Triumphant Lord of life.  That is the foundation of our faith, our forgiveness, and our victory over this world!

We thank Pastor Matthew Thompson for leading us in worship and sharing God’s word with us!  Gods continued and riche blessings to him and his wife.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn  “Alleluia, Alleluia!  Hearts to Heaven”             LSB 477

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

 Opening Sentences Psalm 1:1-2 – Paul was inspired to write this for us to hear.  “I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.  In fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.  Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven.”

Confession and Absolution – Humble yourselves then before God, confess your sins to Him, and implore His forgiveness.     All:  O almighty God, most merciful Father, I, a repentant sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have offended You.  By nature, I am a sinful creature.  In thought, word, and deed I have continually transgressed and broken Your law.  For this I justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment.  For the sake of the sufferings and death of Your Son, Jesus Christ, be gracious and merciful to me, a penitent and contrite sinner.  In Your mercy, forgive me all my sins and grant me the power of Your Holy Spirit that I may amend my sinful life and bear fruit in keeping with true repentance.   God be gracious to you and strengthen your faith.  Amen.   As you believe, so let it be. As a called and ordained servant Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis      LSB 204

Prayer of the Day – O Lord, graciously hear the prayers of Your people that we who justly suffer the consequence of our sin may be mercifully delivered by Your goodness to the glory of Your name; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Old Testament Reading  Jeremiah 17:5-8 – This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the LORD.  That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes.  They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.  “But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.  They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.  It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.  It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

The Epistle or New Testament Reading  1 Corinthians 15:12-20 – But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?  If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.  And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.  More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead.  But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised.  For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either.  And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.  Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost.  If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.  But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

Verse – Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts!  Alleluia. Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. Alleluia.

Holy Gospel Luke 6:17-26   The Holy Gospel according St. Luke, the Sixth chapter.       Glory to You, O Lord.         He went down with them and stood on a level place.  A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases.  Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.  Looking at his disciples, he said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.  Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.  Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.  Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.  “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven.  For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.  “But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.  Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry.  Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.  Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.  This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn  “Alleluia!  Jesus is Risen”       LSB 474

Sermon

Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 – It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lived among us, revealing Your glory and love, that our darkness should give way to His own brilliant light.  Therefore, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify Your holy name, evermore praising You and singing;
