GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are glad to have you with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

AS WE GATHER – False shepherds, those religious leaders who do not lead, feed or proclaim the true Word of God, starve, cause unrest, and divide God’s children.  That is what is happening in the so-called “Christian” churches today, who feel it is more important to be politically correct, than be true to God’s Word!  There is only one True word of God, and He calls his children to follow, and be true to it and then believe in the Living Word, Jesus Christ, His Son.  Jesus not only provides all that we need to be physically nourished, but all that we need spiritually to overcome this world.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn “Christ is our Cornerstone”             LSB 912

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

Opening Sentences  – You O Lord, open your hand; You satisfy the desire of every living thing.  Oh Children of God, sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make melody to your God on the lyre!  The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, and find hope in His steadfast love.

Confession and Absolution

Let us humble ourselves before God, confess our sins to Him, and ask His gracious forgiveness.      All:  We humbly confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven and before one another, that we are sinful human beings by nature and by deed. We have not always put God first.  We have used His holy name in ways that do not honor Him.  We have not loved our neighbors as He has called us to.  We have not shared His blessings with those around us as freely as He has given them.  We have strayed from His paths of righteousness and have sinned in ways we know and in ways we do not even recognize.  We are sinners, and in the mercy of Christ our Lord, we pray God that You would have mercy on us,  forgive us all our sins, and to bring us to everlasting life.  Amen.

In Christ His Son our Lord, the almighty and merciful Lord grants us pardon, forgiveness, and remission of all our sins.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I announce that grace unto you.  Your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen and Amen  Thanks be to God our Heavenly Father.

Kyrie    LSB 186

Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis  LSB 187

Salutation – The Lord be with you.      And also with you.

Prayer of the Day – Heavenly Father, though we do not deserve Your goodness, still You provide for all our needs of body and soul. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may acknowledge Your gifts, give thanks for all Your benefits, and serve You in willing obedience; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.    Amen

 Old Testament Reading   Jeremiah 23:1-6

“Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the LORD.  Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the LORD.  “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number.  I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the LORD.  “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.  In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteous Savior.

Psalm of the Day – Psalm 23 – Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.  The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.  He makes me lie down in green pastures.  He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.  He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Epistle – New Testament Reading  Ephesians 2:11-22

Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)—remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.  But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.  For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.  He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.  For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.  Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.  In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.  And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

Holy Gospel       Mark 6:30-44

The Holy Gospel according St. Mark, the Sixth chapter.       Glory to You, O Lord.

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.  Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”  So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.  But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.  When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.  So he began teaching them many things.  By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him.  “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late.  Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”  They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages!  Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”  “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”  When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”  Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.  So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.  Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.  Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.  They all ate and were satisfied,  and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.  The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.   This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Our Confession of Faith – The First Article of the Apostles Creed

We began our time of worship this morning, In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Let us confess our faith in the First Person of that Holy Trinity and reflect on our confession of faith using the words written by Martin Luther.   I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.     What does this mean?    I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them.  He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life.  He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him.  This is most certainly true.

Sermon

 Prayers of the Church

The Lord’s Prayer –   Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

We Gather our Tithes and Offerings

Service of the Sacrament

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 –   The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Proper Preface –  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, Lord our God.  You are the creator of all things and great is the majesty of Your glory.  You did so love the world that You sent Your only Son to be our Redeemer.  By His sacrificial life, our Great Shepherd of the sheep has brought us salvation and has shown us the path to life eternal.  Pour upon us now the gift of the Holy Spirit that we may receive the body and blood of our Lord with true devotion in this sacred fellowship of Your devoted people.  Grant us a foretaste of the feast to come, heavenly Father, that we may with increased faith joyfully await a blessed eternity in Your glorious presence and singing:

Sanctus     LSB 195

Prayer of Thanksgiving –   Blessed are You, O Lord of heaven and earth.  We give thanks to You for the gifts of bread and wine here before us and for Your gracious provision for all of Your creatures.  Invited by Your grace and supported by Your love, we come to Your Table with thanksgiving and praise.  Grant that we with true faith and trust in Your words of promise receive the bread and wine, that is, the very body and blood of Christ, as a guarantee of the salvation that He purchased for us through His innocent suffering and death on the cross.  Receive our prayers and praises and grant us Your goodness and mercy day by day.  To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and praise with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.    Amen

From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism

Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” What all of mankind’s efforts, works and scheming could not do, the blood of Christ did: We have peace with God, and we are brought near to the Father. This life-giving sacrifice of Christ sets the pattern for the sacrifices we are called to make for others in our vocations in home, church and society.

The Pewpoint – Theme of the Day – The Lord Jesus Shepherds His Church on Earth by the Ministry of the Gospel

The Lord rebukes and removes “the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep” (Jer. 23:1). He gathers the flock, brings them back to the fold, and sets “shepherds over them who will care for them” (Jer. 23:3–4). He raises up the Son of David, the great Good Shepherd, to “reign as king and deal wisely” (Jer. 23:5). He is “our righteousness,” in whom we “dwell securely” (Jer. 23:6). He has compassion on all of us, who were “like sheep without a shepherd” (Mark 6:34). Not only does He teach us many things, but taking the bread, He blesses and breaks and gives it to the disciples “to set before the people” (Mark 6:41). He abundantly provides for His Church on earth, so that everyone is fed and fully satisfied in body and soul. He preaches peace “to you
