Guests. Welcome to Zion. We are glad to have you with us. Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex. About Holy Communion: We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given. If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us. If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service. To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330. Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.
AS WE GATHER – In today’s Old Testament Reading, Jeremiah has just learned of a plot against him, and he asks God to provide him justice, against his enemies. At times our faith is weakened in the face of opposition from satan or the world. That is when we can rely on the mercy and strength of our gracious God. Without His love and grace in our lives we would be doomed to hell! Again and again, we are reassured, “God gives grace to the humble,” James was inspired to share that when we acknowledge God’s grace in Christ can we pray for His justice and presence and know He is with us. The Twelve viewed being great like the world they grew up in. Jesus teaches them and us that being great is humbling ourselves as a child and serving others in His love and grace.

Hymn *vs 4 ONLY* “Lord of Glory, You Have Bought Us” LSB 851
We Celebrate the Sacrament of Holy baptism. – Today we welcome Case Allen Westenberg into the family of believers as God our heavenly Father makes him His child by connecting His Word of forgiveness and life to a simple washing of water made powerful by His promise to give Case faith and to be with him each day of his life. Case is the son of Joshua and Holley Westenberg.
Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 11:18-20 – Because the Lord revealed their plot to me, I knew it, for at that time he showed me what they were doing. I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; I did not realize that they had plotted against me, saying, “Let us destroy the tree and its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more.” But, O Lord Almighty, you who judge righteously and test the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you I have committed my cause.
New Testament or Epistle Reading James 3:13-4:10 – Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness. 4:1-10 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Verse – Alleluia. If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all. Alleluia.
Holy Gospel Mark 9:30-37 – The Holy Gospel according St. Mark, the Nineth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord.
They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.” But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it. They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.” This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon
Prayers of the Church
The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
We gather our Tithes and Offerings
Service of the Sacrament
Preface 2 Timothy 4:22 – It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and all places give thanks to You, Lord our God, for You have graciously blessed us through the Word incarnate, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who has come in the flesh and for our sake died on the cross and rose from the dead to put an end to death. Rejoicing in our Baptism, which creates faith in our hearts and daily renews us, we laud and magnify Your holy name. With joy we join in the unending praise of the angels and archangels and all the company of heaven in singing;
Sanctus LSB 208
Prayer of Thanksgiving – Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements
Proclamation of Christ 1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20 – As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Closing Prayer – Gracious God, our heavenly Father, You have given us a foretaste of the feast to come in the Holy Supper of Your Son’s body and blood. Keep us firm in the true faith throughout our days of pilgrimage that, on the day of His coming, we may, together with all Your saints, celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom which has no end; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
Benediction Numbers 6:24–26 – The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and X give you peace. Amen.
