GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are glad to have you with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather – The Readings for today remind us that God works in the lives of His children.  The Old Testament Reading lists those who are blind, deaf, lame, and mute. Instead of advising them simply to pray, Isaiah promises that God will be with them and change their lives, like water in the desert.  One of the ways God helps people is through His children; according to James inspired words, we, who have been given the gift of faith, are called to treat others fairly, keep the entire Law of God, and to see that the people around us are clothed and fed through the blessings we have been given. Jesus casts out demons and heals a deaf man in the Gospel.  He is working through us when we become His caring instruments as we reach out to all people.  Today He comes to us in His Word so that we might be part of God’s healing answer to prayer.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn “Hail to the Lord’s Anointed”             LSB 398

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

Opening Sentences Psalm 146 – Praise the Lord.  Praise the Lord, O my soul.  I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.  Praise the Lord.

Confession and Absolution – Let us confess our sins to God our Father.     All: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.  We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment.  For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.  Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.    Almighty God in his mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit.   Amen

Psalm 28:1-2,6-7 – The Lord is the strength of his people; he is the saving refuge of his anointed.  To you, O Lord, I call; my rock, be not deaf to me, lest, if you be silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.  Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy, when I cry to you for help, when I lift up my hands toward your most holy sanctuary.  Blessed be the Lord!  For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.  The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.   Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.  The Lord is the strength of his people; he is the saving refuge of his anointed.

Kyrie      LSB 168 – In peace let us pray to the Lord.    Lord, have mercy.  For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.    Lord, have mercy.  For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.  Lord, have mercy.    For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.   Lord, have mercy.  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.   Amen.

Hymn of Praise – This is the Feast – This is the feast of victory of our God.  Alleluia!      Worthy is Christ, the lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God.    Power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and blessing and glory are His.     This is the feast of victory of our God.  Alleluia.     Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation.    Blessing and honor and glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever.  Amen  This is the feast of victory of our god, for the lamb who was slain has begun His reign.  Alleluia!  Alleluia!

Salutation – The Lord be with you.      And also with you.

Prayer of the Day – O Lord, let Your merciful ears be open to the prayers of Your humble servants and grant that what they ask may be in accord with Your gracious will; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Old Testament Reading   Isaiah 35:4-7a – Say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.”  Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped.  Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy.  Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.  The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs.

Epistle  James 2:1-10, 14-18 –  My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favoritism.   Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in.  If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?  Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?  But you have insulted the poor.  Is it not the rich who are exploiting you?  Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?  Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong?  If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right.  But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.  For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.  vs.14-18  What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds?  Can such faith save him?  Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.  If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?  In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.  But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”

Gradual – Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing!  Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.  Alleluia. The Lord builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the outcasts of Israel.  He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.  Alleluia.

Holy Gospel       Mark 7:31-37 –   The Holy Gospel according St. Mark, the Seventh chapter.       Glory to You, O Lord.      Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.  There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged him to place his hand on the man. After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears.  Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue.  He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means, “Be opened!”).  At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.  Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone.  But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it.  People were overwhelmed with amazement.  “He has done everything well,” they said.  “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”     This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn  “Jesus Shall Reign”      LSB 832

Sermon

Apostle’s Creed –   I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Church

We Gather our Tithes and Offerings

Service of the Sacrament

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 – The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Proper Preface –  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, out of love for His fallen creation, humbled Himself by taking on the form of a servant, becoming obedient unto death, even death upon a cross.  Risen from the dead, He has freed us from eternal death and given us life everlasting.  Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

Sanctus    LSB 178

Prayer of Thanksgiving –    Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior.  With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.  Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit.  Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament.  Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end.  Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us.  To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements

Proclamation of Christ  1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20 –   As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.      Amen.  Come, Lord Jesus and hear us as we pray:

The Lord’s Prayer –   Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

Pax Domini – The peace of the Lord be with you always.   Amen

Post-Communion Thanksgiving –   Oh Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.  His steadfast love endures forever.     We give thanks to You, gracious Father, for what You have revealed to us through Your Son.  As Your Spirit continues to call us through Your Word, grant us ears to hear, wills to obey, hands to serve, and hearts filled with the grace that You have bestowed on us in this Holy Supper.  Strengthen and preserve us all our days; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.     Amen.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS…

       September 9th: Elder meeting @ 6pm.

  • September 10th: The “Chosen” Bible Study in the sanctuary at 6pm.
  • September 12th: Serving Bread and Roses

We are excited to announce…  Sunday School will continue in the Fall.                           To enroll your children, please contact Erica Goehl.

BREAD and ROSES – Zion is scheduled to serve on Thursday, September 12th and is looking for volunteers. Signup sheets are on the table in the Narthex. Once again they have lost their place to distribute from, but they are planning on continuing to serve the Watertown people in some way.  They have asked if anyone has ideas for a location which they can use in Watertown.  If you have any ideas please contact Pastor Dan or Beth and we will forward those ideas to them.

The “Chosen” Bible Study – The Chosen is an American Christian historical drama television series. The Chosen allows us to see Him through the eyes of those who knew Him. The bible study will watch an episode and have a discussion afterwards. We meet on EVERY Tuesday of the month at 6pm in the sanctuary starting on September 10th. Feel free to join us as all are welcome.

QUILTING –   The quilters meet on Thursdays 11am to 2pm. If interested, contact Caroline Jeffers as they do not meet every Thursday. Donations of fabric, sheets (flat or fitted), and yarn are always appreciated. You do not have to know how to sew as there are many non-sewing tasks to be completed. All are welcome.

THINK ABOUT THIS… In a recent survey of Nominal Christians, individuals who attend church less than once a month were asked “Think about what it would be like for you to visit a church you were unfamiliar with”.  They were then asked to rate each item below for how it would make you feel that the church was warm and friendly or cold and unfriendly.  In ranked order from warm to cold the results are as follows:      Someone at the door greeting you with a smile.

Seeing other church attendees smiling.

Seeing a friend in attendance.

Someone in the church offering you a seat.

Someone personally inviting you to attend again.

Someone engaging you in conversation.

Someone personally inviting you to a church activity.

Having all visitors welcomed by a church leader.

Someone offering you direction in new surroundings.

Someone at the door noticing you as a newcomer.

Someone in the church noticing you as a newcomer.

Someone handing you a bulletin or service schedule.

Someone outside the church noticing you as a newcomer.

Looking at the results we can see being hospitable is one of the top reasons someone will feel comfortable in your church.   People will endure a lot but not a lack of hospitality.

From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism – James 2:2 – “For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in …” God shows no partiality: rich and poor alike are called into the kingdom. And both rich and poor alike have something to contribute to the kingdom in accordance with the callings God has given them in their lives. This is why both the Old and New Testaments talk about proportional giving — that is, giving a proportion of our income to the Lord’s work. This makes it possible for rich and poor alike to have the honor of supporting God’s work.

The Pewpoint – Theme of the Day – Our Merciful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Does All Things Well – The Lord proclaims the Gospel “to those who have an anxious heart” to comfort and encourage them with His presence. He comes not only with threats of “vengeance” and “recompense,” but with His gracious salvation (Is. 35:4). He opens “the eyes of the blind” and “the ears of the deaf,” and He loosens “the tongue of the mute” to “sing for joy” (Is. 35:5–6). Like water on thirsty ground, He speaks His life-giving Word to people of all nations. With His Word and the touch of His hand, He does “all things well,” so that you may now speak “plainly” (Mark 7:31–37). You confess the truth of God in Christ to the glory of His holy name, and you call upon His name in every trouble, confident that He will hear and answer. As you pray and confess with your tongue, so also “love your neighbor as yourself” (James 2:8). Show your faith “in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory,” by loving without partiality. For God has “chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom” (James 2:1–5).
