GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As we Gather  How’s your faith?  Is it firm, steadfast, and strong? Or do you find it at times, weak, uncertain, or even in danger of disappearing?  We are warned today that the same opposition, rejection, and betrayal faced by prophets like Jeremiah, and even Jesus, will also face us as His followers.  When faced with opposition to our faith we remember the words of Jesus- “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on My account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you”  Our faith believes in and finds strength in the one who endured “the cross, despising it’s shame.”

Hymn  “Children of the Heavenly Father”  LSB 725

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

Confession and Absolution  Psalm 32:1–2 –  Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.     Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.  I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,”  and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.        All:  Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed.  Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ.  O most merciful God who has given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.     Almighty God has had mercy upon you and has given His only Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins.  In the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  He who began this good work within you will bring it to completion on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.    Amen and Amen.  So shall it be.  Amen

Our Response to God’s forgiveness Psalm 32 –   I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.  You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance.

Prayer of the Day – O God, You see that of ourselves we have no strength. By Your mighty power defend us from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Old Testament Reading   Jeremiah 26:8-15 – But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the LORD had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said, “You must die!  Why do you prophesy in the LORD’s name that this house will be like Shiloh and this city will be desolate and deserted?”  And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.  When the officials of Judah heard about these things, they went up from the royal palace to the house of the LORD and took their places at the entrance of the New Gate of the LORD’s house.  Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and all the people, “This man should be sentenced to death because he has prophesied against this city.  You have heard it with your own ears!”  Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people: “The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the things you have heard.  Now reform your ways and your actions and obey the LORD your God.  Then the LORD will relent and not bring the disaster he has pronounced against you.  As for me, I am in your hands; do with me whatever you think is good and right.  Be assured, however, that if you put me to death, you will bring the guilt of innocent blood on yourselves and on this city and on those who live in it, for in truth the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing.”

Introit Psalm 74:1–3; antiphon: Psalm 69:9 – Zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.  O God, why have you rejected us forever?  Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?  Remember the nation you purchased long ago, the people of your inheritance, whom you redeemed— Mount Zion, where you dwelt.  Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins, all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen  Zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.

Our Epistle or New Testament Reading        Philippians 3:17-4:1 –   Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.  For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.  Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.  But our citizenship is in heaven.  And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.  4:1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!

Verse – O come, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.  How long will you people turn my glory into shame?  How long will you love delusions and seek false gods?  Know that the LORD has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him.

Holy Gospel   Luke 13:31-35  The Holy Gospel according St. Luke, the Thirteenth chapter.   Glory to You, O Lord.

At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else.  Herod wants to kill you.”  He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’  In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!  “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.  Look, your house is left to you desolate.  I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’ ”    This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon

Apostles’ Creed –  I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Church

We gather our Tithes and Offerings

Service of the Sacrament

Proper Preface – It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who overcame the assaults of the devil and gave His life as a ransom for all sinners, that with cleansed hearts we might be prepared joyfully to celebrate the paschal feast in sincerity and truth. Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

 Sanctus     LSB 208

Prayer of Thanksgiving –  Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, with repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of our Lords body and His blood on the cross.  Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, O Lord, grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament.  Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end.  Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us.  To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.    Amen.

The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements

Proclamation of Christ  1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20 –    As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.      Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.  O Lord keep us faithful until You return to take us to be with you.  Hear us now as we pray the prayer you taught us to pray:

The Lord’s Prayer –  Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

Pax Domini – The peace of the Lord be with you always.    Amen.

Benediction      Numbers 6:24–26 –   The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and X give you peace.   Amen.

If you would rather give to something different, please contact our treasurer, Erica Goehl, for a different suggestion.

PLEASE REMEMBER…

If you are the last person leaving the church, please be sure to check that all lights are turned off, and don’t forget about the bathrooms. Also, make sure that all the doors are locked. Double check them by giving the door a good tug after they have closed to make sure the lock has latched.
