GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are glad to have you with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We gather-  The Spirit of Independence, liberty, and self-determination  embodied in the Declaration of Independence continues to resonate with Americans to this day.  It serves as a reminder of the hard-fought struggles and sacrifices made by the founding fathers and countless others in their pursuit of freedom.  For the freedoms we have as a nation, we give thanks to the many men and women who have, and continue to be willing to put themselves in harms way to protect it and make our freedom possible.  As Christians we also know that the blessings our nation enjoys are from the One True God that we believe in, follow, worship, and give thanks to.  Our service today reflects our faith as we worship and praise the Almighty God who sustains and makes this land great only as He sees fit to bless it with His presence, protection, and love.

The Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Invocation

Confession and Absolution – If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.                Let us confess our sins to God our Father.

All:  Almighty God, heavenly Father, You have given me life and made me a citizen of this great nation and all that I have is from You.  In order for me to be protected, live a productive life and in peace, You have placed people in authority over me.  I confess that I have acted like I deserve these blessings and have not given You the thanks and praise I should.  I have not shared the peace You have given me in Your Son, my Savior.  I have not prayed for those in authority over me, nor my enemies.  In these and many other ways, I have sinned in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone.  I have not loved You with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself.  I justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment.  For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner.   Amen

Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

National Anthem

O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming.  And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand, Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation!  Blest with vict’ry and peace may the heav’n rescued land, Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!  Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto – “In God is our trust,” And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Psalm 33:12, 96 (selected verses) – Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance. Sing to the LORD, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day.  Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.  For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.  Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth.  Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance.

The Christian Flag enters the Sanctuary and is placed in the Chancel

Pledge of Allegiance to the Christian Flag

I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag and to The Savior for whose Kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified, risen, and coming again, with eternal life and liberty for all who believe in Him.

The Battle Hymn of the Republic

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.  He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.  He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword His truth is marching on.

Refrain- Glory, Glory, hallelujah!  Glory, glory, hallelujah!  Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat, He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat.  Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him!  Be jubilant, my feet!  Our God is marching on.   Refrain

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea.  With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me.  As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free.  While God is marching on.    Refrain

Prayer of the Day – We pray as sons and daughters of God and Lord.  Heavenly Father, creator and ruler of the world:  we give you thanks for giving life to our nation, and for blessing us with the opportunity to live in this nation that is free.  We give You thanks that You continue to preserve us in that freedom, especially the freedom to worship You, hear Your word, and live according to it in our daily lives.        Bless Your children in this nation, and around the world.  Through the Holy Spirit, give us the strength and zeal to be Your bright lights of grace and love shining in the darkness and evil of our nation and world.  Allow us to share the news of true freedom in the forgiveness, purchased for all people in the blood of Your Son, Jesus Christ.  To You O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be all praise and glory, now and forever.  Amen

Our Scripture Readings

2 Chronicles 7:14- if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Galatians 5:1 & 13- It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.  Vs13   You, my brothers, were called to be free.  But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature ; rather, serve one another in love.

John 8:36- So, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

 America, the Beautiful

O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain!  America!  America!  God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet Whose stern, impassioned stress A thoroughfare of freedom beat Across the wilderness!  America!  America!  God mend thine every flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved And mercy more than life!  America!  America!  May God thy gold refine Till all success be nobleness And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years Thine alabaster cities gleam Undimmed by human tears!  America! America! God shed his grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!

My Country, ‘Tis Of Thee

My country, ’tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims’ pride, From every mountainside, Let freedom ring!

My native country, thee, Land of the noble free, Thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills, Thy woods and templed hills; My heart with rapture thrills, Like that above.

Our fathers’ God, to Thee, Author of liberty, To Thee we sing; Long may our land be bright With freedom’s holy light; Protect us by Thy might, Great God, our king.

Sermon

Apostle’s Creed –    I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Church

The Lord’s Prayer –   Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

 Benediction

 God of Our Fathers

God of our fathers, whose almighty hand Leads forth in beauty all the starry band,     Of shining worlds in splendor through the skies: Our grateful songs before your throne arise.

Your love divine has led us in the past; In this free land by you our lot is cast; Oh, be our ruler, guardian, guide, and stay; Your Word our law, your paths our chosen way.

From war’s alarms, from deadly pestilence Make your strong arm our ever sure defense.  Your true religion in our hearts increase; Your bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.

Refresh your people on their toilsome way; Lead us from night to never-ending day;
Fill all our lives with heav’n-born love and grace Until at last we meet before your face.
