GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

In 1530 Martin Luther described the rose to a friend.  He said that the black cross on a red heart reminds us that the crucified Christ saves us.  The cross humiliates us and causes us pain, but also brings us righteousness and life when, in our hearts, we believe in the crucified Savior.  The heart is in the center of a white rose, to show that faith brings joy, comfort, blessedness, and peace beyond that of the world.  The background of the rose is sky blue to show that this joy in the Spirit and in faith is the beginning of the heavenly joy to come.  It is surrounded by a golden ring, to signify that the bliss of heaven is endless and lasts forever and is more precious than all other joys and treasures.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn  Salvation Unto Us Has Come            LSB 555

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

Opening Sentences Psalm 46 –     I will speak of your testimonies before kings, O Lord, and shall not be put to shame.  I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.  My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad.      God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.      God has said; “Be still, and know that I am God.”  The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Confession and Absolution – Humble yourselves before God, confess your sins to Him, and implore His forgiveness.    All:  O almighty God, most merciful Father, I, a repentant sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have offended You.  By nature, I am a sinful creature.  In thought, word, and deed I have continually transgressed and broken Your law.  For this I justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment.  For the sake of the sufferings and death of Your Son, Jesus Christ, be gracious and merciful to me, a penitent and contrite sinner.  In Your mercy, forgive me all my sins and grant me the power of Your Holy Spirit that I may amend my sinful life and bear fruit in keeping with true repentance.       God be gracious to you and strengthen your faith.  Amen.   As you believe, so let it be. As a called and ordained servant Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis      LSB 204

Prayer of the Day – O God, You make the minds of Your faithful to be of one will. Grant that we may love what You have commanded and desire what You promise, that among the many changes of this world our hearts may be fixed where true joys are found; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Our First Reading   Revelation 14:6-7 – Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth–to every nation, tribe, language and people.  He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

Our Second Reading  Romans 3:19-28 –   Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.  But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.  This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.  There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.  God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.  He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished–he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.  Where, then, is boasting?      It is excluded.  On what principle?  On that of observing the law?  No, but on that of faith.  For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

Verse – Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

Holy Gospel  Matthew 11:12-19 –   The Holy Gospel according St. Matthew, the Eleventh chapter.  Glory to You, O Lord.

From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.  For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.  And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.  He who has ears, let him hear.  “To what can I compare this generation?”  They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:  ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge and you did not mourn.  For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.  The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and “sinners.” ‘ But wisdom is proved right by her actions.    This is the Gospel of the Lord.     Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn  A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”       LSB 657

Sermon

Apostles’ Creed –   I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Church

We gather our Tithes and Offerings

 Service of the Sacrament

Proper Preface  – It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord our God, king of all creation.  Grant us Your Spirit, gracious Father, that we may give heed to the testament of Your Son in true faith and, above all, firmly take to heart the words with which Christ gives to us His body and blood for our forgiveness.  By Your grace, lead us to remember and give thanks for the boundless love which He manifested to us when, by pouring out His precious blood, He saved us from Your righteous wrath and from sin, death, and hell.  Grant that we may receive the bread and wine, that is, His body and blood, as a gift, guarantee, and pledge of His salvation.  Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us.  To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

Sanctus                                                                       LSB 208

Prayer of Thanksgiving –   Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and have given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.  We thank You for having called us as Your people who are kept by Your abiding care in this, our contentious world.  Grant that all who partake of Christ’s holy body and blood this day be filled with Your heavenly peace and joy. As we join at Your Table, grant that we be sanctified in body and soul and spirit and finally be granted our place in Your eternal kingdom. This we ask through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.
