GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

We Thank Rev. Darald Gruen for leading us in worship and sharing God’s Word with us.  May God continue to bless him and his wife Sharon, with strength, healing, and His daily presence and love.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn Lord, Jesus Christ, Be Present Now”        LSB 902

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.   Amen.

Confession and Absolution – If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.   But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

All:  Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.  We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment.  For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.  Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name.  Amen

Almighty God in his mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins.  As an ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I announce God’s grace unto you, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the  X Son, and of the Holy Spirit.   Amen

Psalm 112:3-6, antiphon vs 1 – Praise the Lord.  Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in his commands.  Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.  Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man.  Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely, who conducts his affairs with justice.  Surely he will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever.  Praise the Lord.  Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in his commands.

Kyrie     LSB 168  In peace let us pray to the Lord.    Lord, have mercy.  For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.  Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.      Lord, have mercy.   For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.   Lord, have mercy.  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.   Amen.

Hymn of Praise – This is the Feast – This is the feast of victory for our God.  Alleluia!  Worthy is Christ, the lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God.  Power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and blessing and glory are His.  This is the feast of victory for our God.  Alleluia.  Sing with all the people of God and join in the hymn of all creation.     Blessing and honor and glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever.  Amen.  This is the feast of victory for our god, for the lamb who was slain has begun His reign.  Alleluia!  Alleluia!

Salutation – The Lord be with you.      And also with you.

Prayer of the Day – Lord Jesus Christ, whose grace always precedes and follows us, we ask that You would help us to forsake all our trust in earthly gain and to find in You our earthly blessings and our eternal heavenly treasure; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Old Testament Reading   Jeremiah 8:4-12 –   “Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: ” ‘When men fall down, do they not get up? When a man turns away, does he not return?  Why then have these people turned away?  Why does Jerusalem always turn away?  They cling to deceit; they refuse to return.  I have listened attentively, but they do not say what is right.  No one repents of his wickedness, saying, “What have I done?”  Each pursues his own course like a horse charging into battle.  Even the stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons, and the dove, the swift and the thrush observe the time of their migration.  But my people do not know the requirements of the Lord.  “‘How can you say, “We are wise, for we have the law of the Lord,” when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely?  The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and trapped.  Since they have rejected the word of the Lord, what kind of wisdom do they have?  Therefore I will give their wives to other men and their fields to new owners.  From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit.  They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious.  “Peace, peace,” they say, when there is no peace.  Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct?   No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush.  So they will fall among the fallen; they will be brought down when they are punished, says the Lord.

Epistle or New testament   2 Peter 3:1-14 – Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you.  I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking.  I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.  First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.  They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised?  Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”  But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water.  By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.  By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.  But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.  The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness.  He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.  The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.  Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?  You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.  That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.  But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.  So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

Gradual – He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.  Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name!

Holy Gospel  Matthew 11:1-6 – The Holy Gospel according St. Matthew, the Eleventh chapter.   Glory to You, O Lord.

After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.  When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples to ask him, “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?”  Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.  Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.”   This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn  Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness”      LSB 563

Sermon – 2 Peter 1:16-21

Why Believe in Jesus?            Why Be a Christian?

  1. Believe in Jesus because the life and ministry of Jesus prove that He really is the Son of God, our only Savior.

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.

Believe in Jesus because He is the One promised by God through the OT prophets.

19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Now, it is our calling to share this Jesus with the world around us in this dark age.

Apostle’s Creed –   I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Church

We Gather our Tithes and Offerings

Service of the Sacrament

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 – The Lord be with you.    And also with you.    Lift up your hearts.   We lift them to the Lord.   Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Proper Preface – It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who at His transfiguration revealed His glory to His disciples that they might be strengthened to proclaim His cross and resurrection and with all the faithful look forward to the glory of life everlasting.  Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

Sanctus                           LSB 178

Prayer of Thanksgiving – Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior.  With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.  Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament.  Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end.  Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us.  To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements

Proclamation of Christ  1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20 –   As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.      Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.    O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment.  So, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

Pax Domini – The peace of the Lord be with you always.   Amen
