Guests. Welcome to Zion. We are happy to have you worship with us. Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex. About Holy Communion: We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given. If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us. If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service. To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330. Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.
As We Gather Through faith, we are heirs of God’s glory. We are sinners and saints, sons and daughters. In the Transfiguration, we see God’s promised revelation in Jesus our Lord! All sinners know the effects of sin. God invites us into the light and glory of His Son, so our lives can be filled with the love and grace of the one Transfigured! We know what lies ahead for our Lord. We will follow Him and watch His disciples abandon Him. We will watch the illegal trials, where Halleluiah’s turned to crucify Him! We will see the mocking, the scourging, the crucifixion and His death, His greatest act of love which allows us to be heirs of heaven. May this Lenten season strengthen our faith and once again reassure us of all that He has done for us as our Living Lord and Savior.
Hymn “O Bless the Lord My Soul” LSB 814
Opening Sentences – Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise! How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God.
Confession and Absolution – If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us All: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us then confess our sin to God our Father. All: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen Almighty God, we have seen Your glory in the transfiguration of Jesus, Your only-begotten Son. We join in faith the prophets, apostles, and all Christians who believe in the glory of the cross of our Lord where along with Him our sins were paid for in full. Upon this your confession, I by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of that Living Lord, announce His grace to you. I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Introit Psalm 99; antiphon: v. 9 – The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake! The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples. Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he! The King in his might loves justice. Exalt the Lord our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he! Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel also was among those who called upon his name. They called to the Lord, and he answered them. In the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them; they kept his testimonies and the statute that he gave them. O Lord our God, you answered them; you were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings. Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the Lord our God is holy! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Kyrie – Behold Moses, from the tribe of Levi, prophet of Yahweh, and yet a sinner and thus denied access into the Promised Land. Lord, have mercy. Behold Elijah, a mighty prophet, judge of Israel, and yet a wounded sinner, hungry, afraid, and depressed. Christ, have mercy. Behold Peter, James, and John, bold confessors, preachers, disciples, witnesses, and sinners. Lord, have mercy. And behold Jesus, the transfigured Son of God, the source of all comfort, defender against adversity, and fountain of grace. Glory to You O God and Father. Amen
Hymn of Praise – This is the Feast – This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia! Worthy is Christ, the lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God. Power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and blessing and glory are His. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia. Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation. Blessing and honor and glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen This is the feast of victory for our god, for the lamb who was slain has begun His reign. Alleluia! Alleluia!
Collect of the Day – O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
Old Testament Reading Deuteronomy 34:1-12 – Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the LORD showed him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan, all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea, the Negev and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar. Then the LORD said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.” And Moses the servant of the LORD died there in Moab, as the LORD had said. He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone. The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over. Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the LORD had commanded Moses. Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, who did all those signs and wonders the LORD sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land. For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
Epistle or New Testament Reading Hebrews 3:1-6 – Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. “Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,” bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.
Gradual Psalm 117:1–2a; 96:8 – Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
Gospel Reading Luke 9:28-36 – The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the Ninth Chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.) While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ.
Hymn “’Tis Good Lord, to be Here” LSB 414
Sermon
Apostle’s Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayers of the Church
We Gather our Tithes and Offerings
Service of the Sacrament
Preface 2 Timothy 4:22 – The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
Proper Preface – It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who at His transfiguration revealed His glory to His disciples that they might be strengthened to proclaim His cross and resurrection and with all the faithful look forward to the glory of life everlasting. Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:
Sanctus LSB 178
Prayer of Thanksgiving – Blessed are You, O Lord, whose voice rained down from heaven, declaring Jesus Your only Son and calling all of us to listen to Him and His Words of life. In our frail sinful flesh, Open our hearts to receive His Word. Open our minds to focus on Your Words of promise, and our ears to hear and believe in Your divine truths. By Your Holy Spirit, inspire us to treasure the glory of Jesus, transfigured, but also crucified and risen, that we may thoroughly believe by faith all that He has done to redeem us to You. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements
Proclamation of Christ 1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20 – As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:
The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Pax Domini – The peace of the Lord be with you always. Amen

Post-Communion Thanksgiving – O God the Father, source of divine nourishment, through Your Holy Word, and our Lord’s very body, and blood, You increase our faith and give us courage to bear our crosses in the name of Jesus, glorified and crucified. At His meal, You unite us with all the saints who have preceded us. Together, with all believers, past, present, and future, we are heirs of Your eternal promises. We are witnesses of Christ’s life, suffering, death, and resurrection. Prepare us for our eternal glory, where we will reside with You in Jerusalem, our eternal home. Amen.
Benedicimus – Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Benediction Numbers 6:24–26 – The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and X give you His peace. Amen.
