GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

AS WE GATHER Have you ever received a surprise present, one that was out of your own price range to get?  That, in a nutshell, describes Epiphany.  The Maji came to give presents, and instead received one their wealth could not have bought.  They came to worship a King, but were received by Christ, the King over all creation.  God has included us in being received by the same King.  We are baptized for the forgiveness of sins by His blood on the cross that covers our sins, once for all.  The waters of baptism and His shed blood give us the greatest—and most expensive—gift in the world.  Today we celebrate Jesus revealed, manifested, in a star, in the coming of the Magi who followed God’s star.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn The Star Proclaims the King Is Here”             LSB 399

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

Opening Sentences Colossians 1:15-20 –   The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.  For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him.  He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.    And He is the head of the body, the church; God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross.

Confession and Absolution – Let us now confess our sin and ask God our heavenly Father to grant us forgiveness, for the sake of His Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.        All: O Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You, and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment.  But I am heartily sorry for them, and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy, and for the sake of the Holy, innocent, bitter, sufferings and death, of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being.  Amen     Do you believe that the forgiveness I proclaim to you, is not my forgiveness, but God your heavenly Father’s forgiveness given to you through His Son Jesus Christ?    Yes, I do so believe.     Let it be done for you as you believe.  In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen     Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit, soul, and body, be kept blameless until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it.  God in peace.  Amen

Psalm 72 selected verses –   Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness.  May he judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice.  May he defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; may he crush the oppressor.  In his days may the righteous flourish and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.  May he rule from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.    May all kings bow down to him and all nations serve him.  For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help.  He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death.  He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight.    Long may he live!  Praise be to the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds.  Praise be to his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory.   Amen

Kyrie      LSB 168 – In peace let us pray to the Lord.    Lord, have mercy.  For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.  Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.    Lord, have mercy.  For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.    Lord, have mercy.  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.   Amen.

Hymn of Praise – This is the Feast – This is the feast of victory for our God.  Alleluia!  Worthy is Christ, the lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God.  Power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and blessing and glory are His.  This is the feast of victory for our God.  Alleluia.       Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation.  Blessing and honor and glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever.  Amen.  This is the feast of victory for our God, for the Lamb who was slain has begun His reign.  Alleluia!  Alleluia!

Salutation – The Lord be with you.      And also with you.

Prayer of the Day – O God, heavenly Father, by the leading of a star, You once made known to all nations Your only-begotten Son; now lead us, who know You by faith, to worship Him in faith, and to know in heaven the fullness of Your divine Joy and goodness.  We pray this through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Old Testament Reading   Isaiah 60:1-6 – “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.  See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you.  Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.  “Lift up your eyes and look about you: All assemble and come to you; your sons come from afar, and your daughters are carried on the hip.  Then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with joy; the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come.  Herds of camels will cover your land, young camels of Midian and Ephah. And all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and incense and proclaiming the praise of the LORD.

Our Epistle or New Testament Reading        Ephesians 3:1–12 –   For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles—Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you, that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly.  In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.  This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.  I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power.  Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.  His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.  In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.

Gradual – Alleluia.  Where is He who has been born king of the Jews?  For we saw His star when it rose and have come to worship Him.  Alleluia.

Holy Gospel  Matthew 2:1-12 –  The Holy Gospel according St. Matthew, the Second chapter.    Glory to You, O Lord.      After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?  We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”  When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.  When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born.  “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: “ ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”  Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.  He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child.  As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”  After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.  When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.  On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.  Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.  And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.    This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn  “As With Gladness Men of Old”      LSB 397

Sermon

Apostle’s Creed –   I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 –   The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Proper Preface –  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.  He is the long-awaited prophet and Savior, the Holy One who has destroyed the power of the devil and gives forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation by His sacrifice on the cross.  Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

 Sanctus                          LSB 178

Prayer of Thanksgiving –   Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior.  With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.      Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit.  Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament.  Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us.  To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements

Proclamation of Christ  1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20 –   As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.      Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.        O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

Pax Domini – The peace of the Lord be with you always.   Amen
