AS WE GATHER – In today’s Gospel, the father of a possessed boy says, “If you can do anything . . .”  As God in the flesh, Jesus can do anything—and He wants to!  His concern is never an “if,” but an “always, I am here to help you.”  When our troubles increase, God is always there to help and we are already in His care.  The problem is our lack of believing that He will help us.  Few of us have the resolve and bravado of Isaiah in the Old Testament Reading.  Seldom do we recognize how we use our tongues for both good and evil.  Today the Scripture readings encourage us to turn from relying on ourselves to putting our faith and trust in God alone, knowing, and believing He will help!

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

Confession and Absolution – Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.     If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?  But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.       Since we are gathered to have our faith strengthened by hearing God’s Word and by receiving our Lord’s body and blood in the fellowship of this altar, but cannot come before God in our sinful condition, let us seek His infinite mercy and ask our heavenly Father’s forgiveness.      Almighty God, have mercy on us, forgive the weakness of our faith and our many sins, and restore us to fellowship with You and one another, now and forever.  Amen     In Holy Baptism our heavenly Father declared us to be His children and united us to His Son, by whose death and resurrection all our sins are forgiven.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen

Old Testament Reading   Isaiah 50:4-10 –  The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary.  He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.  The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears, and I have not been rebellious; I have not drawn back.  I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.  Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced.  Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame.  He who vindicates me is near.  Who then will bring charges against me?  Let us face each other!  Who is my accuser?  Let him confront me!  It is the Sovereign Lord who helps me.  Who is he that will condemn me? They will all wear out like a garment; the moths will eat them up.  Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant?  Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God.

Epistle    James 3:1-12 –   Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.  We all stumble in many ways.  If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.  When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.  Or take ships as an example.  Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.  Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.  Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.  The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.  It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.  All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man,  but no man can tame the tongue.  It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.  With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness.  Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing.  My brothers, this should not be.  Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?  My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?  Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

Verse  Mark 1:15 – Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing!  Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.  Alleluia.  All things are possible for one who believes.  Alleluia.

 Holy Gospel       Mark 9:14–29     

The Holy Gospel according St. Mark, the Nineth chapter.       Glory to You, O Lord.       When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them.  As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.  “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.  A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech.  Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground.  He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid.  I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”  “O unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you?  How long shall I put up with you?  Bring the boy to me.”  So they brought him.  When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion.  He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.  Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered.  “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”  ” ‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for him who believes.”  Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”  When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the evil spirit.  “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”  The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out.  The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.”  But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.  After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”  He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer. ”      This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed – I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.   And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.   And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life X of the world to come.    Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer –   Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 – The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Proper Preface – It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, who since the beginning of time has been present and continues to bless us in this time.  Prepare our hearts with true repentance as we receive Your gracious giving of the forgiveness of sins in this Supper.  Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

The “Chosen” Bible Study – The Chosen is an American Christian historical drama television series. The Chosen allows us to see Him through the eyes of those who knew Him. The bible study will watch an episode and have a discussion afterwards. We meet on EVERY Tuesday of the month at 6pm in the sanctuary starting on September 10^th. Feel free to join us as all are welcome.

The next Elder meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 30^th at 6pm.

QUILTING – The quilters meet on Thursdays 11am to 2pm. If interested, contact Caroline Jeffers as they do not meet every Thursday. Donations of fabric, sheets (flat or fitted), and yarn are always appreciated. You do not have to know how to sew as there are many non-sewing tasks to be completed. All are welcome.

Survey shared by the board of stewardship 

In a recent survey of Nominal Christians, individuals who attend church less than once a month were asked “Think about what it would be like for you to visit a church you were unfamiliar with”.  They were then asked to rate each item below for how it would make you feel that the church was warm and friendly or cold and unfriendly.  In ranked order from warm to cold the results are as follows:

• Someone at the door greeting you with a smile.
• Seeing other church attendees smiling.
• Seeing a friend in attendance.
• Someone in the church offering you a seat.
• Someone personally inviting you to attend again.
• Someone engaging you in conversation.
• Someone personally inviting you to a church activity.
• Having all visitors welcomed by a church leader.
• Someone offering you direction in new surroundings.
• Someone at the door noticing you as a newcomer.
• Someone in the church noticing you as a newcomer.
• Someone handing you a bulletin or service schedule.
• Someone outside the church noticing you as a newcomer.

Looking at the results we can see being hospitable is one of the top reasons someone will feel comfortable in your church.   People will endure a lot but not a lack of hospitality.
