AS WE GATHER – Today we think about the great mystery of God—that God is one and that this one God is three persons.  The liturgy in its proclamation focuses on the divine mystery of the triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  The Holy Trinity is not so much truth to be understood as it is truth to be confessed.  We confess the Father from whom all things come, the Son who is the incarnate Lord Jesus Christ, and the Spirit who proceeds from the Father through the Son.  Throughout the centuries of the Christian Church, the confession of the Holy Trinity has been a hallmark of faithful believers.  We sing of the Trinity and, with the profound words of the Creeds we confess the Holy Trinity to be the one true God.

Opening Sentences – Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!  Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they existed and were created.  Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Amen

Confession and Absolution – Almighty God, we are called to confess You as the God who has no equal; You are three distinct persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, yet You one God.

All: Almighty God You are holy, we are not; You are righteous, we are not.  Yet in Your foreknowledge, You knew through Adam we would be sinful at conception, and You put in place a plan of grace and love, a way to redeem us from our sins: the sins of thought, which creep into our minds daily; the sins of our words, which deserve death because of the evil that comes from our tongues; and the sins of our actions, which we know go against Your holy will.  Forgive us, Lord, for these and all sins, not because we are deserving, but through Your mercy shown to us at the cross!  Your Grace for the world in the death and then the resurrection of Your Beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

I ask you before God, who searches all hearts, and before your brothers and sisters in Christ, is this your sincere confession?

Yes, this is my sincere confession before God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and to you my brothers and sisters in Christ.

Upon this your confession, hear the grace-filled response of your heavenly Father.  He has forgiven you all your sins because of the blood of Jesus shed on the cross.  In the stead and at the command of that Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen!

Thanks be to God for His mercy and grace through Christ our Lord!  Amen

Our Old Testament Reading Isaiah 6:1-8

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.  This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”  Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old?  Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”  Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.  That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’  The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.  So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”  Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?”  Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things?  Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony.  If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?  No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.  And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.   This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The “Chosen” Bible Study – The Chosen is an American Christian historical drama television series. The Chosen allows us to see Him through the eyes of those who knew Him. The bible study will watch an episode and have a discussion afterwards. We meet on the 1^st, 3^rd, & 5^th Tuesday of the month at 6pm in the sanctuary. Feel free to join us as all are welcome.

QUILTING – The quilters meet on Thursdays 11am to 2pm. If interested, contact Caroline Jeffers as they do not meet every Thursday. Donations of fabric, sheets (flat or fitted), and yarn are always appreciated. You do not have to know how to sew as there are many non-sewing tasks to be completed.

From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism – John 3:6 – “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” In Holy Baptism we receive a new birth: spirit from Spirit. With that rebirth we receive new desires, new lives, new purposes. To the (fleshly) world, Christian generosity makes no sense: the total minus a percentage is less than the original total. But Spirit-reborn Christians know that God’s math works differently (as we might expect from the Trinity!). A blessing received from God becomes more of a blessing when it is used in generosity to bless others.

The Pewpoint – Theme of the Day – The Glory of the Lord of Hosts Shines in Mercy, Forgiveness and Salvation – When Isaiah “saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up,” he cried out and confessed that he was “a man of unclean lips.” If even the holy angels cover their faces in the presence of “the King, the Lord of hosts,” how can sinful humans stand before Him (Is. 6:1–5)? Yet, the glory of the Lord is saving grace, and with “a burning coal” from the altar the angel touched Isaiah’s lips, removing his guilt (Is. 6:6–7). Likewise, from the altar of Christ’s cross, by the ministry of the Gospel, “the whole earth is full of his glory” (Is. 6:3). For He was crucified, died and was buried, “according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God,” and God “raised him up, loosing the pangs of death” (Acts 2:23–24). He “received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:33), and He raises up the fallen world by pouring out His life-giving Spirit upon sinners through His earthly Means of Grace. To give this saving gift, God sent His Son into the world, “that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16–17).

We join Kris and Neal Kohlhoff in prayers of thanksgiving.  Kris’ recent scans were negative and it will be a year before she will have scans done again.
