AS WE GATHER – In our reading from Hebrews we are told that Jesus is our High Priest.  High priests offered sacrifices for the sins of the people as well as themselves.  Once a year, the High Priest went into the Holy of Holies and made a sacrifice for the nation.  Jesus as the True High Priest not only gave the sacrifice for the sins of the world, but He was also the final sacrifice, once for all, that we might be forgiven and granted eternal salvation.  In the Gospel, Jesus proclaims that He came not to be served, but to serve and He did, through His death which paid for our sins.  As we follow Jesus, we are called to reflect His actions and attitude of service and sacrifice.  May we go into the world to serve and sacrifice for others in response to His love for us.

Prayer of the Day – Almighty God, You sent Your Son as our Great High Priest to stand before You as our substitute and because He gave Himself in our place and we are cleansed and forgiven.  In Your mercy You remember our sins no more.  Give us faith to follow Your will, serve others, and through the Holy Spirit preserve us in body and soul until You send our High Priest to take us to be with You.  We pray this through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

Old Testament Reading   Jeremiah 31:31–34 –   “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.  But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts.  And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.  And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord.  For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Epistle – Hebrews 5:1-10     Every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.  He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness.  Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people.  And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.   So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”  In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.  Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.  And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Gradual & Verse –   O come, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.    Even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them.  And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid.  And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles.  And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him.  And after three days he will rise.”  And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.”  And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?”  And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.”  Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking.  Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?”  And they said to him, “We are able.”  And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”  And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John.  And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.  But it shall not be so among you.  But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.  For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”   This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed –  I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.  And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. The Lord’s Prayer –   Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Announcements –   Our Lenten Series this year is God On Trial!

The unbelieving world has always insisted on putting God on trial. As our society becomes more secular, we Christians are increasingly aware of the many ways in which God—and his people—are judged. Temptations are many in this environment: treating unbelievers as enemies, retreating from the world, even questioning God ourselves. How do we live as people of God in this hostile world? We find our model—and our motivation—in Jesus. This series takes us back to the moments when God was literally on trial before men in the person of Christ. In these inspired episodes, we find forgiveness for us and all people, love for our enemies, strength for our faith, and courage to testify to the truth.    This year Pastor Bruce Meier who is interim pastor at Trinity and I decided with our Elders input, to share our Lenten season between the two congregations. Each congregation will have their own Holy week services on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter.  Members of Zion and Trinity are encouraged to attend all the services be they at Zion or Trinity.

***Chicken Dinner***  The Peace Lutheran Church, Men of Peace are sponsoring a chicken dinner on Sunday, March 17^th from Noon until 2pm. The fundraiser is being held in the Fellowship Hall at Peace Lutheran Church in Beaver Dam. Dine in or carry outs are available. The meal includes: fried chicken, mashed potatoes, stuffing, coleslaw, corn, dinner roll, beverage, & dessert. Tickets for adults are $11, children are $6, and free for those age 5 & under. For each adult ticket sold, $2 will be given to Mission Central in Mapleton, Iowa to assist their efforts to raise awareness & support for all LCMS missionaries.

The “Chosen” Bible Study – The “Chosen” bible study will continue to meet on the 1^st, 3^rd, & 5^th Tuesday of the month at 6pm in the sanctuary. The next date is March 19th.

QUILTING – The quilters will be meeting on Thursday April 4^th from 11am to 2pm. If interested, contact Caroline Jeffers as they do not meet every Thursday. Donations of fabric, sheets (flat or fitted), and yarn are always appreciated. You do not have to know how to sew as there are many non-sewing tasks to be completed.                

Our Last Lenten Soup Supper –   The last soup supper hosted by the Elder’s will be on Maundy Thursday, March 28^th at 6pm.  Please join us for the fellowship and delicious food! There is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex.

Easter Flowers –    If you are interested in putting flowers on the altar for  Easter, there will be a sheet in the narthex to complete the information for the bulletin in the next couple of weeks. Please purchase your own flowers, and make sure they are at church by Saturday before Easter, to be arranged.

EASTER BREAKFAST!!!!-   Zion again will be serving Easter Breakfast in the church basement between services on Easter Sunday. There are signup sheets in the Narthex if you would like to donate food and/or your services. All are welcome.

 From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism –   Mark 10:45 – “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Jesus gives everything He has: He gives Himself. That self-giving is the model for our giving in all aspects of our lives. In our family, in our church, and in the world at large, Jesus calls us to follow His example of self-giving. We can only do this if we are connected to His self-giving in faith.

The Pewpoint – Theme of the Day      In the Holy Sacraments, We Share the Glory of the Cross of Christ!        Jesus catechizes His disciples in the way of the cross, revealing that He will be condemned and put to death “and after three days he will rise” (Mark 10:33–34). But the Twelve do not understand. Instead, they argue among themselves about who will be the greatest, with James and John requesting the places of honor on either side of Jesus in His glory. However, Jesus has come to make Himself the “slave of all” and “to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:43–45). He shares the true glory of His cross with all who are baptized with His Baptism and with those who drink His cup of salvation, the New Testament in His blood (Mark 10:39). By these Holy Sacraments, the Lord makes Himself known to all His people, forgiving their sins “from the least of them to the greatest” (Jer. 31:33–34). Though He is the very Son of God, “he learned obedience through what he suffered” and so became our great High Priest, that we may enter His glory by the way of His sacrifice (Heb. 5:8–10).

We pray for a peaceful release for Cliff Babler, the father of member Rita Weisjohn who is in hospice care.

We pray for healing and strength for parents of member Erica Tyler.  Mom Carol who recently celebrated her 85^th birthday and had her last chemo treatment. Erica’s Dad Roger had been hospitalized and is now home.
