 AS WE GATHER – The season of  Lent lasts for forty days (excluding Sundays). This forty-day season of Lent is a time of repentance.  It is a time when we recall Jesus’ forty days of fasting and temptation in the wilderness.  Throughout our forty days of Lent, our readings and worship services remind us where we are going.  We are headed toward the cross where our Savior Died in our place, but we are also reminded that we journey beyond the cross to His empty tomb, to His victory over sin, death, and the devil, which are ours through our faith in Him.

Opening Sentences Psalm 25:1-2. Psalm 91:15-16

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.  O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me.  When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.  With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.

Confession and Absolution – As we begin our Lenten journey, we remember when God claimed us as His child and forgave us of our sins.  It was in the name of the Triune God that we were baptized—In the name of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  As we remember our baptism, we remember that we were made members of God’s family.  We must confess that even though we are baptized and united with Jesus, we often act as if we are still children of satan.  We continue to sin and fall to satan’s temptations.  We sin in our thoughts, words, and deeds.  In faith we go to our merciful Father as He invites us to come to Him through His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord and as His forgiveness with repentant hearts.  Heavenly Father, have mercy on us. Forgive our sins, and lead us in righteousness, on account of Jesus. Amen.

Almighty God in His infinite mercy gave His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, to endure temptation, suffering, and death for you and your salvation.  Upon hearing your confession, as a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority,  I announce His Grace unto you.  I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.        We are forgiven in God’s grace and mercy through Christ Jesus our Lord.  Amen

Old Testament Reading   Genesis 22:1-18  (Abraham is asked to sacrifice Issac)

After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!”  And he said, “Here am I.”  He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”  So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac.  And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.  On the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place from afar.  Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.”  And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son.  And he took in his hand the fire and the knife.  So they went both together.  And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!”  And he said, “Here am I, my son.”  He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”  Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.”  So they went both of them together.  When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.  Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.  But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”  And he said, “Here am I.”  He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”  And Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns.  And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.  So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”  And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. Epistle James 1:12-18 (All good gifts come from above)    Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.  Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.  But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.  Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.  Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.  Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

Gradual – O come, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

Holy Gospel       Mark 1:9-15 (Jesus’ baptism)

The Holy Gospel according St. Mark, the first chapter.       Glory to You, O Lord.

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.  And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opening and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.  And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”  The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.  And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.   Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”     This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed –   I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.  And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.  Our Lenten Series this year is God On Trial! –   The unbelieving world has always insisted on putting God on trial. As our society becomes more secular, we Christians are increasingly aware of the many ways in which God—and his people—are judged. Temptations are many in this environment: treating unbelievers as enemies, retreating from the world, even questioning God ourselves. How do we live as people of God in this hostile world? We find our model—and our motivation—in Jesus. This series takes us back to the moments when God was literally on trial before men in the person of Christ. In these inspired episodes, we find forgiveness for us and all people, love for our enemies, strength for our faith, and courage to testify to the truth.

This year Pastor Bruce Meier who is interim pastor at Trinity and I decided with our Elders input, to share our Lenten season between the two congregations. Each congregation will have their own Holy week services on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter.  Members of Zion and Trinity are encouraged to attend all the services be they at Zion or Trinity.

Mark 1:13 – “And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.” God the Father cares for Jesus even in the midst of His temptation in the wilderness. God cares for us in every situation as well. Jesus realized this and always acted from the basis of trust in God the Father’s provision. This is likewise the basis for our life lived in Christ: God cares for us, so we need not act out of fear or greed.

 The Pewpoint – THEME OF THE DAY –   Christ Jesus Defeats Our Temptation and Saves Us by His Faithfulness – In faith and the fear of God, Abraham prepared to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac. At the Word of the Lord, he “took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son.” And “when they came to the place of which God had told him,” Abraham bound Isaac “and laid him on the altar” (Gen. 22:6, 9). Then God stayed Abraham’s hand and provided “for himself the lamb for a burnt offering” (Gen. 22:8). That Lamb is God’s own beloved Son, Jesus, in whom “all the nations of the earth” are blessed (Gen. 22:18). As the Substitute for all the sons of men, Jesus is driven by the Spirit “into the wilderness” to be “tempted by Satan” (Mark 1:12–13) in order to endure and defeat all temptation. We are tempted by our own desire, which conceives and “gives birth to sin” (James 1:14–15). But this blessed Man, Christ Jesus, remained “steadfast under trial,” and He has received “the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12). His faithfulness, His victory and His life are now given to us by His grace in the Gospel.

The “Chosen” Bible Study – The “Chosen” bible study will continue to meet on the 1^st, 3^rd, & 5^th Tuesday of the month at 6pm in the sanctuary. The next date is February 20^th.
