 AS WE GATHER – Out of the brilliance, power and confusion of the Transfiguration for Peter, James, and John, God the father speaks!  “This is My beloved Son; listen to Him” (Mark 9:7). Moses, God’s giver of the Law is there!  God’s great prophet Elijah is there, but then both are gone.  Jesus closest disciples are with Him, to see His full power and glory, but they must return to the others, and Jesus must continue His ministry.  The power and glory of the Transfiguration of the Lord will not go away from Him or His work.  It remained in the many miracles, as He was lifted high upon the cross, the empty tomb, all of them reinforced the power seen on that mountain.  For us His power and glory endure forever in His grace forgiveness and love.  The Father continues to encourage us: “Listen to Him.”  Listen to the Word made flesh, as He My Son!

Prayer of the Day – O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah.  In Your voice that came from the bright cloud You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace.  Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Old Testament Reading   Exodus 34:29-35   (Moses face glowed from being in the presence of God on Sinai)

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD.  When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him.  But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and he spoke to them.  Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the LORD had given him on Mount Sinai.  When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face.  But whenever he entered the LORD’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out.  And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, they saw that his face was radiant.  Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the LORD.

 Epistle       2 Corinthians 3:14–18, 4:1-6   (The Gospel’s message is veiled to the unbeliever, but Christ shines in that darkness)         But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read.  It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away.  Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts.  But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.  Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.  And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.     4:1-6   Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.  Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God.  On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.  And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing.  The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.  For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.  For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

The Holy Gospel according St. Mark, the Nineth chapter.       Glory to You, O Lord.

After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone.  There he was transfigured before them.  His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them.    And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.  Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here.  Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”  (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)  Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”  Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.  As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.      This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostle’s Creed –   I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

 6pm- Wednesday February 14^{th –} Come and join your brothers and sisters for a meal and time of fellowship before service!  Thank you Elders for providing this opportunity!

This Wednesday February 14^th is Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent, the church’s 40-day journey of repentance and renewal in preparation for Holy Week and Easter.  Because of its unique character and place in the church calendar, Ash Wednesday deserves celebration as a separate festival rather than being assimilated into the cycle of congregational midweek Lenten services.

The readings for Ash Wednesday issue a strong call for Lenten preparation.  Ash Wednesday’s special call to repentance and renewal is not repeated during the Sundays in Lent because they are not properly part of the season (hence the nomenclature Sundays in Lent, rather than Sundays of Lent).  Rather, these Sundays serve as “islands of refreshment” during the course of the season, in keeping with the emphasis that all Sundays are “little Easters.”

This year Pastor Bruce Meier who is interim pastor at Trinity and I decided with our Elders input to share our Lenten season between the two congregations. Each congregation will have their own Ash Wednesday service on February 14^th. Each congregation will have their own Holy week services on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter.  Members of Zion and Trinity are encouraged to attend all the services be they at Zion or Trinity.

 The “Chosen” Bible Study – The “Chosen” bible study will continue to meet on the 1^st, 3^rd, & 5^th Tuesday of the month at 6pm in the sanctuary. The bible study will not meet on February 13^th as previously stated.

 QUILTING – The quilters will be meeting on Thursday February 15^th & 29^th from 11am to 2pm. If interested, contact Caroline Jeffers as they do not meet every Thursday. Donations of fabric, sheets (flat or fitted), and yarn are always appreciated. You do not have to know how to sew as there are many non-sewing tasks to be completed.

From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism: –    Mark 9:6 – “For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified.” Soon enough, the disciples’ terror turned into joy, for when Jesus is with us, there is no need to fear. He loves us and cares for us and will never abandon us. That assurance is the basis of all generosity — for only those who are set free from worry can learn the joy of giving.

The Pewpoint – THEME OF THE DAY –   The Face of Jesus Christ Manifests the Light of the Knowledge of the Glory of God

It was “a hard thing” that Elisha asked, but by his persistence he was able to see the prophet Elijah being taken “by a whirlwind into heaven.” Although “chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them,” Elisha received Elijah’s cloak and a “double portion” of his spirit for preaching the Lord’s Word (2 Kings 2:9–11). It was a hard thing, too, for Israel to see Moses and come near to him, when “the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God” (Ex. 34:29–30). Therefore, after “he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai,” Moses “put a veil over his face” (Ex. 34:32–33). Only the Word of the Gospel lifts the veil, and “only through Christ is it taken away” (2 Cor. 3:14). Thus are we able to behold “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ,” who is “the image of God” (2 Cor. 4:4–6). For the Law and the prophets are all fulfilled in Him. Therefore, “listen to him,” and fix your sights on “Jesus only” (Mark 9:7–8).
