AS WE GATHER –  “Your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart” (Jeremiah 15:16). The prophet Jeremiah did not praise God with such words because his life was super easy. No, Jeremiah rejoiced in the Lord even as his life had plenty of problems.  Why such delight in difficulty?  Surrounded by evil in this world, like Jeremiah, we cling to the God who is good, learning to trust His Word as the means by which we receive His deliverance from our enemies of sin and death. The living, active, delightful voice of our Savior guarantees His ongoing presence in our life. Because of this, we rejoice! As we gather in the presence of Jesus this day, let us echo Jeremiah’s anthem of praise: “Your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart!”

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn  “Lord of Glory, You Have Bought Us”     LSB 851

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.    Amen

Confession and Absolution –   Return to the Lord, your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.  Jesus said: If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.  Christ was wounded for our transgressions.  He was bruised for our iniquities.  Pastor, hear my confession and pronounce the forgiveness of God in order to fulfill His will.   Proceed with your confession.     I, a poor miserable sinner, plead guilty before God of all sins.  I have lived as if God did not matter and as if I mattered most.  My Lord’s name I have not honored as I should; my worship and prayers have faltered.  I have not let His love have its way with me, and so my love for others has failed.  There are those whom I have hurt, and those whom I have failed to help.  My thoughts and desires have been soiled with sin.   What troubles me most is- We observe a time of silent reflection on those sins weighing heavy on our hearts.     We continue our confession.  Heavenly Father, I am sorry for all of my sins and ask for Your grace through Jesus Christ, Your Son, my Lord.  I want to do better through the help of the Holy Spirit.    God be merciful to you and strengthen your faith.    Amen      Do you believe that the forgiveness I proclaim is God’s forgiveness for you?  Yes.  Let it be done for you as you believe.  In the stead and by the command of the Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit.    Amen

Introit   Psalm 26; antiphon: v. 8 – O Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.  Vindicate me, O Lord, for I have walked in my integrity, and I have trusted in the Lord without wavering.  Prove me, O Lord, and try me; test my heart and my mind.  For Your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in Your faithfulness.  I do not sit with men of falsehood, nor do I consort with hypocrites.  I hate the assembly of evildoers, and I will not sit with the wicked.  I wash my hands in innocence and go around Your altar, O Lord, proclaiming thanksgiving aloud, and telling all Your wondrous deeds.  O Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.  Do not sweep my soul away with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men, in whose hands are evil devices, and whose right hands are full of bribes.  But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity; redeem me, and be gracious to me.  My foot stands on level ground; in the great assembly I will bless the Lord.  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.  O Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.

Kyrie –  In peace let us pray to the Lord.  Lord have mercy.   For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.   Lord have mercy.   For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. Lord have mercy  For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.  Lord have mercy.  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.  Amen

Hymn of Praise – This Is the Feast  LSB 171

Salutation – The Lord be with you.         And also with you.

Prayer of the Day – Almighty God, Your Son willingly endured the agony and shame of the cross for our redemption.  Grant us courage to take up our cross daily and follow Him wherever He leads delighting in Your goodness to us, we ask for this in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.     Amen.

Old Testament Reading   Jeremiah 15:15–21 – (“I am with you to save you and deliver you.”)

You understand, O Lord; remember me and care for me.  Avenge me on my persecutors.  You are long-suffering–do not take me away; think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.  When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God Almighty.  I never sat in the company of revelers, never made merry with them; I sat alone because your hand was on me and you had filled me with indignation.  Why is my pain unending and my wound grievous and incurable?  Will you be to me like a deceptive brook, like a spring that fails?  Therefore this is what the Lord says: “If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman.  Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them.  I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to rescue and save you,” declares the Lord.  “I will save you from the hands of the wicked and redeem you from the grasp of the cruel.”

Epistle  Romans 12:9–21    (“Overcome evil with good.”) –    Love must be sincere.  Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.  Honor one another above yourselves.  Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.  Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Share with God’s people who are in need.  Practice hospitality.  Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.  Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.  Live in harmony with one another.  Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.  Do not be conceited.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil.  Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody.  If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.  Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.  On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.  In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Verse  Matthew 16:25 – Alleluia. Whoever would save his life will lose it,  but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. Alleluia.

Holy Gospel    Matthew 16:21–28    (Losing life and finding it in Christ.) –    The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the  sixteenth chapter.       Glory to You, O Lord.

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.  Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said.  “This shall never happen to you!”  Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”  Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.  What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?  Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?  For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.  I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”      This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day He rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 – The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Proper Preface –   It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who delivers us from the enemies of sin and death so that we may live in Your victory and overcome evil with the power of Your grace.  Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

Sanctus                                                                         LSB 178

Prayer of Thanksgiving – Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for the victory that is ours in Christ. You have defeated our enemies of sin, death, and the devil by His sacrifice upon the cross. Gathered in the name and remembrance of Jesus, we here receive Your perfect love, which overcomes the evil of our world and replaces it with Your goodness.  Bowing our heads and our hearts before You, we ask You to heap upon us Your mercy so that we may delight in You and then extend to others the grace forgiveness and love we here receive.  Hear us now as we pray in Jesus’ name the prayer He has taught us:

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

 *Announcements*

From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism: –    Matthew 16:26 – “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” He who dies with the most toys … is dead. But the one who trusts in the Lord, even though he dies, yet shall he live. We live out our trust in the Lord by faithfully fulfilling the roles God has given us to play in home, church and society as loving, generous people. Those who don’t know the Lord are afraid to be generous because they think that what they give away is lost to them. But we who know the Lord know that the things of this world become true blessings when they are used for God’s kingdom.

The Pewpoint – THEME OF THE DAY – The Glory of God Is the Passion and Cross of Christ Jesus   After St. Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, our Lord “began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised” (Matt. 16:21). Upon hearing this “theology of the cross,” Simon Peter stumbled into a satanic “theology of glory.” But the glory of God is revealed in the Passion and cross of His incarnate Son. The faithful prophets, such as Jeremiah, suffered persecution and rejection in anticipation of Jesus’ cross. Yet the Lord did not abandon them; He remembered them, and He was with them to deliver them (Jer. 15:15–20). By His cross, Jesus has redeemed the world, and in His resurrection, He has vindicated all who trust in Him. Thus, the Christian life is a discipleship of self-sacrificing love. Since Christ Jesus has reconciled us to God, we “live peaceably with all” (Rom. 12:18). By the certainty of His cross and resurrection, we “rejoice in hope,” and we are “patient in tribulation” and “constant in prayer” (Rom. 12:12).
