AS WE GATHER – Pentecost proves for God’s people that the work of Jesus remains in us and in our world.  As we read the account of Pentecost in Acts 2, we see that the ascension of Jesus some ten days beforehand is not the end of His work in this world.  Far from it!  Jesus continues His saving work through God the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon the Apostles and continues to send Him into the lives of all believers. This same Holy Spirit enables us to carry His message into all the world.  We are the messengers who spread the Good News of Him who was crucified for us, who rose again, who reigns on high, and who will one day return to this world in His full, heavenly glory.  We listen to His message today as the Holy Spirit brings it into our midst and are assured that as we are brought to faith in Christ, we receive the fullness of who has called us to be His child.

 Confession and Absolution –   If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.    Let us confess our sins to God our Father.  Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.  We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment.  For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.  Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name.  Amen    Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.     Amen.

Prayer of the Day – O God, on Pentecost You sent the Holy Spirit and at His direction You taught the hearts of Your faithful people by sending them the light of Your Son Jesus Christ.  Grant Your children of today, the same power and teaching of the Holy Spirit so that we may joyfully receive the message of Christ, who has come for us all.  We pray this through the urging of God the Holy Spirit, through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.      Amen.

 Old Testament Reading   Numbers 11:24–30 –  (The Lord’s Spirit rests on the elders of Israel)

 So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said.  He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the Tent.  Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took of the Spirit that was on him and put the Spirit on the seventy elders.  When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not do so again.  However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp.  They were listed among the elders but did not go out to the Tent.  Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp.  A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”  Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ aide since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”  But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!”  Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

Second Reading Acts 2:1–21 – (The Holy Spirit fills the disciples on Pentecost.)     When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.  Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.  They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.  Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.  When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.  Utterly amazed, they asked: “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?  Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language?  Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs–we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”  Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”    Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”  Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.  These men are not drunk, as you suppose.  It’s only nine in the morning!  No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.  Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.  Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.  I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.  The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.  And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

 Gradual  Acts 2:17b; Romans 10:10 –  I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy.   With the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Holy Gospel – John 7:37–39   (Jesus promises the Holy Spirit to those who believe.)   The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the seventh chapter.       Glory to You, O Lord.        On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.  Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”  By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.  Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.         This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed –   I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.    And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. Proper Preface –    It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who sends to us the Holy Spirit with the message of the Gospel so that we may know Him as the One who was crucified and then raised to life again for our salvation.  Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

Prayer of Thanksgiving-    Blessed are You, Creator of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son to bear our sin and be our Savior.  In humble faith and with hearts of joy, we receive the message of Your salvation, which comes to us through Your promised Holy Spirit.  Gathered in the fellowship of Your Spirit, we trust in You, heavenly Father, to forgive us, renew us, and lead us by means of Your Holy Word.  As we gather at Your Table,  dear Savior, we are united in one faith by the Holy Spirit and as You unite Your body and blood to the bread and wine so that we receive it in the one true faith, and through them receive the fullness of Your grace.   To You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be all glory and honor, now and forever.  Amen

From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism:    Acts 2:1 – “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.” Pentecost is the Old Testament harvest festival, taking place around the time when the wheat and oats are ready to be brought in. Of course, this was an image and foreshadowing of the great harvest of humankind that God means to carry out through the preaching of His Word. God gives the seed, and God brings about the harvest. From first to last, in things temporal and things eternal, we stand only by His grace.

The Pewpoint –  THEME OF THE DAY – The Risen Lord Jesus Pours Out the Holy Spirit – The Lord took “some of the Spirit” that was on Moses “and put it on the seventy elders” of Israel (Num. 11:25), and they “prophesied in the camp” (Num. 11:26). In the same way, our risen Lord Jesus poured out His Holy Spirit at the Feast of Pentecost — the 50th day and the “Eighth Sunday” of Easter. When “a sound like a mighty rushing wind” and “tongues as of fire appeared” and rested on each of the 12 apostles, “they were all filled with the Holy Spirit” and proclaimed “the mighty works of God” (Acts 2:2–4, 11). The Lord Jesus grants this same Spirit to His Church on earth to proclaim Him glorified on the cross and risen victorious from the grave for us sinners. From His open heart, our crucified and risen Lord pours out His Holy Spirit in “rivers of living water” (John 7:38) and invites everyone who thirsts to come to Him and drink freely (John 7:37). Through this life-giving work of the Holy Spirit, we hear our pastors “telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God” (Acts 2:11), and “everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21).
