Christ is the Good Shepherd!  Our Shepherd and the Gate to Our Eternal Home!

AS WE GATHER 

 Today we hear about Jesus as both the One True Shepherd and the Door for His sheep.  Jesus is the Good Shepherd, who leads us to green pastures and still waters.  Jesus is also the gate which protects us and the gate by which we enter eternal life.  As we believe in and follow Jesus, we know that He is always leading us toward righteousness—toward His eternal dwelling where He has prepared a place for us.  That eternal dwelling is the green pasture of heaven.

 Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.    Amen

 Opening Sentences – Alleluia! Christ is risen He is risen indeed! Alleluia! The Lord is our Good Shepherd;   He leads us and restores our souls.  He walks beside us through the darkness  and never abandons us, even in death. He goes before us and prepares a table for us,  and we will dwell in His house forever.

Confession and Absolution – Though our Lord goes before us, is beside us, and behind us as the Good Shepherd, we still find a way to run away from His leading and good pasture. Even though we as His sheep wander, our Good Shepherd seeks us out and brings us back to safety.  In His grace, He invites us to confess our sins before His heavenly Father.   A Short time of silence to reflect on those sins heavy on our hearts

Beloved in the Lord!  Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to grant us forgiveness.

O Almighty God, merciful Father, I a poor miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment.  But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the  X  Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen

He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.  Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.  The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

 Prayer of the day – Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Good Shepherd who has brought together sheep from every tribe, nation, and language to be one flock ever following You. Strengthen us to devote ourselves to Your Word and Sacraments, to prayer and fellowship, for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.   Amen

 First Reading   Acts 2:42–47 – They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.  Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.  All the believers were together and had everything in common. Epistle 1 Peter 2:19–25 – For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God.  But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it?  But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.  To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.  “He committed no sin,
and no deceit was found in his mouth.”  When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.  Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.  He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.  For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Verse     Romans 6:9; John 10:14 – Alleluia. We know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over Him. Alleluia. I am the good shepherd. I know My own and My own know Me. Alleluia.

Holy Gospel John 10:1–10 – The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the tenth chapter.   Glory to You, O Lord.

“I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.  The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep.  The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.  When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.  But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.”  Jesus used this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them.  Therefore Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.  All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.  I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.  He will come in and go out, and find pasture.  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon

 Nicene Creed – I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism:   1 Peter 2:21 – “For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.” Our heavenly Father wants us to grow into the image of His Son and to follow in His steps. Jesus suffered for us not only to redeem us, but also to show us what love looks like and to leave us an example of self-giving, sacrificial generosity. “Let us ever walk with Jesus, follow His example pure.”

The Pewpoint – THEME OF THE DAY – The Crucified and Risen Lord Jesus Christ Is Our Good Shepherd    Although we “were straying like sheep,” the Lord Jesus Christ has willingly suffered and died for us, bearing our sins “in his body on the tree” (1 Peter 2:24–25). We are healed by His wounds (1 Peter 2:24), and in His resurrection He gathers us to Himself as our Good Shepherd, by whose righteousness we “have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). Now through other shepherds whom He calls and sends in His name, He guards and keeps us in the green pastures of His Church, leading us beside the quiet waters of our Baptism and spreading the feast of His table before us. Since He has called us by the Gospel to be His own dear sheep, we also “hear his voice” and “know his voice” (John 10:3–4) in the faithful preaching of His Gospel, and we follow Him by faith. When we receive His Gospel, we have the abundant life and common unity of the entire flock under one Good Shepherd, in “the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship” and in “the breaking of bread and the prayers” (Acts 2:42).

Brothers and sisters in Christ to lift up in prayer!

1) Hannah Uttech, relative of Neal and Ralph Kohlhoff and Nancy Basol, has arrived home Friday April 21st from her surgery which is way ahead of the original plan. Pray is a miracle….

2) Granddaughter of Beverly Schwantes who was hospitalized Sunday the 23^rd.  She is improving, but will need further work and healing.

3)  The family of Roger Erickson a past member of Zion, uncle of Connie Kreitzman, Pennie Huebner and Dawn Pint, as he has received his eternal crown.
