AS WE GATHER- The love of our God is foolishness to the world and those who do not want to follow Him.  In love and power, He brought His children out of Egypt leading them to the promised land He had promised.  They complained that He did not treat them fairly.  Paul reminds us of what the world cannot understand or believe.  How the Father in His love for the world, allowed His Son to die on a cross.  But Christ crucified and risen is the message we are to proclaim.  In our Gospel reading, Jesus teaches how to be blessed by Him and how to live before our Heavenly Father.  A teaching of humility, love and putting others first which goes against everything the world and our sinful nature believes and thinks.  May we in the Love of our God, go against the thinking of the world, and proclaim His love for all people.

Epistle   1 Corinthians 1:18–31-   For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”  Where is the wise man?  Where is the scholar?  Where is the philosopher of this age?  Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?  For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.  Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.  For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.  Brothers, think of what you were when you were called.  Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.  But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.  He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things–and the things that are not–to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.  It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God–that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.  Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”

 Holy Gospel  Matthew 5:1–12-  The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fifth chapter.     Glory to You, O Lord.

Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. Prayers of the Church

 The Lord’s Prayer- Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

Confession and Absolution- I, a poor miserable sinner, plead guilty of all my sins before You O God.  I have lived as if You do not matter, and I have lived as if I mattered most.  Your name I have not honored as I should; my worship and prayers of You have faltered.  I have not let Your love have its way with me, and so my love for others has failed.  There are those whom I have hurt, and those whom I have failed to help.  My thoughts and desires have been stained by my sin.  O God, I am sorry for all of this and ask for Your grace in Christ my Lord.  I want to do better!  I want to change my sinful life through the power of the Holy Spirit.

From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism:  1 Corinthians 1:18 – “Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” God’s ways are certainly not the world’s ways, including the way God tells us to manage the resources He’s given to us. The world says, “hold on, hold back and gather up.” Jesus says to store up treasure in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy and where no thief breaks in to steal. Whose way do you think is best? What is wiser: the wisdom of the financial gurus or the foolishness of God?

The Pewpoint – THEME OF THE DAY- God Manifests His Glory in the Humility and Weakness of Christ Crucified-    The Lord tells His people, “I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery” (Micah 6:4). By the sacrifice of His beloved Son, He has redeemed us from our slavery of sin and death; He has forgiven our transgressions by the shedding of His blood. His great mercy and salvation lead us “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly” with our God (Micah 6:8). We boast only in the incarnate and crucified Lord Jesus. He is “the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Cor. 1:24). He is our life and salvation, our “wisdom” and “righteousness and sanctification and redemption” (1 Cor. 1:30). Now He opens His mouth and teaches us His wisdom. By His cross and Passion, the kingdom of heaven is ours. We receive mercy and are satisfied; we see God and are called sons of God in Christ. “Blessed are you,” therefore, “when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely” on account of Christ (Matt. 5:11).

 Announcement- The church council has called for 2 special congregational meetings with the purpose of discussing and approving Zion’s revised constitution.  The first meeting was held after worship on January 15th.  The second special congregational meeting will follow the worship service today, January 29th.  The goal of our meeting today is to vote on and accept the revised constitution so it can be sent to the District to be approved by their Constitution Committee.  If you would like a copy sent to you by email or a printed copy, please talk to Pastor.  Thank you.
