AS WE GATHER – A new year has begun, and yet, so little seems to change.  Same job, home, school, work.  We add one number to the year and get up with the alarm again in the morning!  Even spiritually, life seems to stay the same.  The same battles with satan, sin, and the world.  In the face of the sameness, we rejoice not only in the new year God has put before us, but also in His Son who allowed Himself to be put under the law through circumcision to fulfill that law.  We rejoice in the newness that has come to us in Christ!  He has given us more than a new year, He has given us a new life, for Christ has set us free!  Through Baptism we bear Christ’s name, we are given His forgiveness, and the salvation He earned is ours!

Opening Sentences  Galatians 3:24–26;  Christ, our Savior is born!   O come, let us adore Him!  When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.  O come, let us adore Him, the one born to set us free! 

 Confession and Absolution- As we begin a new year in God’s grace, we acknowledge and repent of our sinfulness and failure to keep His Law. “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it”  Lord, we confess to You our sins, those of which we know, and those of which we are unaware.  We have not always viewed Your Law as a gift, but instead at times as a burden to live through.  Though we desire to be free, we find ourselves slaves to our sin and cannot free ourselves from it.  In Your mercy, forgive us.  For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.  In Him forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name.  Amen   “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”  Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you, and for His sake forgives you all your sins.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the  X Son and of the Holy Spirit.    Amen.

Old Testament Reading –Numbers 6:22–27  (God’s blessing on His people through Aaron)   The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: “‘The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”‘  “So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”

 

Epistle Readings 

Galatians 3:23–29   (The Law and the promise)   Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed.  So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith.  Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.  You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.  There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Colossians 2:11-14- In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.  When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ.  He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.

 Gradual and Verse  Hebrews 8:10; 10:17   Matthew 1:21 – This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord:  I will put My laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts.  I will be their God, and they shall be My people.  I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.  Alleluia.  She will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus,(the Lord Saves), for He will save His people from their sins.  Alleluia.

 Holy Gospel  Luke 2:21- (Jesus is circumcised and given the name as told them by the Angel.)

 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the second chapter. Glory to You, O Lord.  On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he had been conceived.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

 

Apostles’ Creed- I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

 Lord’s Prayer- Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  Proper Preface-  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, gracious Lord Jesus Christ.  You are the source of our life, the ruler of time, the giver of Your good and wise Law, and the one who redeems us and sets Your people free.  Grant continued faith for our journey through a new year as we live as Your beloved children, until the day we join with angels, archangels, and all the company of heaven who laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism:  Luke 2:21 – “And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.” There it is: the shortest Gospel lesson of the whole Church Year. It is for the festival of the Circumcision and Name of Jesus. What more do you need to know than the name of Jesus — “the Lord saves.” That’s who Jesus is: the Lord who saves us sinners. That simple Gospel message is the foundation of our faith and the strength to live out our faith.

 The Pewpoint – THEME OF THE DAY  The Lord Jesus Comes in the Flesh to Fulfill the Law for Us and Save Us from Our Sins!  Circumcision is the covenant God made with Abraham and his seed. It sealed God’s promises and blessings in the flesh, but it also signified the burden of the Law. When the Lord Jesus came in the flesh to redeem His people, He subjected Himself to the Law in order to fulfill the Law and release all men from its captivity. “He was called Jesus” (Luke 2:21), because He came to save His people from their sins. He would shed His blood on their behalf, as He did already when “he was circumcised” (Luke 2:21). As He also sacrificed Himself upon the cross, you are “justified by faith” in His blood (Gal. 3:24). Therefore, “you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise” (Gal. 3:29), not by the circumcision of your flesh, but in the flesh and blood of Christ Jesus, the true seed of Abraham. “Baptized into Christ,” you belong to Him and are clothed and covered by His righteousness (Gal. 3:27). Holy Baptism is the true circumcision made without hands, by which the Lord Jesus puts His name on you and blesses you (Num. 6:22, 27).

Epiphany is Friday January 6^th – some interesting information below

What is Epiphany and when do we celebrate it?- This date is celebrated as the visit of the magi to see Jesus. Epiphany is also known as Three King Day or Feast of Three Kings. We don’t know exactly how many kings came to visit Jesus after his birth but we do know they brought three gifts for our king. The church in Rome celebrated Epiphany on January 6^th. We will be celebrating Epiphany on January 8^th Sunday service.

What does Epiphany stand for?  The word epiphany has a variety of meanings intimately related to one another. Epiphany means the shining of a light, a shining forth, a manifestation, an appearance, or a revelation. The Day of the Epiphany, with Easter and Pentecost, is one of the three oldest and most important festivals observed by Christians.

Reports – The yearly contribution reports are ready to be picked up in the narthex.  As far as the new numbers they are listed on the envelope of your yearly contribution or there is a listing in the narthex..
