AS WE GATHER- In today’s Readings, we hear warnings about the coming day of the Lord. The day of Judgment! His warnings could fill us with fear and questions, but we know that God is faithful, and His Son of righteousness has come with healing to give life to all who fear(believe in) the Lord. We are strengthened by God’s faithfulness to us. He protects us from the assaults of satan and the world. He keeps us firm in our faith. He directs us to His Son and His victory over the sinful world we live in, so that we can stand firm in our faith, remain faithful to Him, by believing in His Word of life.

Opening Sentences – Psalm 121:1–8 – I Lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip; he who watches over you will not slumber. Behold, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you; the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will watch over your life. Confession and Absolution- Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. A time of Silence to reflect on those sins heavy on our hearts All: O Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. Old Testament Reading Malachi 4:1–6 (The day of the Lord is coming.)
“Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the Lord Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them. But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall. Then you will trample down the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I do these things,” says the Lord Almighty. “Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel. “See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.”
Psalm Psalm 98; antiphon: v. 9b- All: He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity. Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The Lord has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations. Epistle 2 Thessalonians 3: 1–13 (Paul warns against idleness as we live our lives until the day of the Lord.)
Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you. And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith. But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow. Holy Gospel Luke 21:5–36 (Jesus prophesies the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem, foreshadowing His death and the final judgment.)
Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.” “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?” He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.” Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. “But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. This will result in your being witnesses to them. But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. All men will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. By standing firm you will gain life. “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. “I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.” This is the Gospel of the Lord. Nicene Creed- I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. Our Advent theme is “Prepare!”- Join us each Wednesday as we “Prepare” for the coming King, the Christ Child born in Bethlehem! On Nov. 30th, Mary will be our example of how to think about or “Ponder” the meaning of the Birth of our Savior! On Dec. 7th, “Prayer”– communicating with our heavenly Father as we wait for Christ, learning from Zechariah. On Dec. 14th, “Praise” will be our theme as we celebrate the coming birth along with Elizabeth who rejoiced at the news of the coming birth of Christ! Our final Advent service on Dec. 21st, John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, will show us how to have courage in “Proclaiming” the news of the Christ Child along with our faith in the One who was born to save all people!
From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism: Luke 21:6 – “As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” Everything in this world is headed for the graveyard, but some things are also destined to rise from the grave. On that Day of Resurrection – as we look back on our earthly life – what will we see? What will have really mattered? This is a good question to ask ourselves in this season of the church year that focuses on The Last Things.
The Pewpoint – THEME OF THE DAY – God’s Plan of Redemption Trumps Earthly Destruction and Violence! There are signs of the Lord’s coming all around: the cross that marks His Church, the violence and death of the sinful world, and the shaking of the natural order. “There will be great distress upon the earth” (Luke 21:23), but the faithful know that “the kingdom of God is near” (Luke 21:31). Therefore, “straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near” (Luke 21:28). Be awake and alert, and heed the words of Christ, which “will not pass away” (Luke 21:33). For you, “the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings” (Mal. 4:2). He sends His preachers of repentance in the spirit and power of Elijah “before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes” (Mal. 4:5), in order to “direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ” (2 Thess. 3:5). Although you are often faithless, “the Lord is faithful,” and by the preaching of His Word “he will establish you and guard you against the evil one” (2 Thess. 3:3). Therefore, “do not grow weary in doing good” (2 Thess. 3:13). In the midst of calamity, believe upon the Lord, Jesus Christ.

Brothers and sisters in Christ to lift up in prayer! 1) Deanne as her students continue to inspire her, and she challenges and enlightens their hearts and minds with knowledge and the news of Christ. 2) As it is Veterans Day weekend will honor and pray for all veterans of all branches of the military, who have served or are in active service around the country and world. 3) Theresa and I would like to give thanks for the safe birth of our daughter’s twins on October 30th. Even though early and small, Felicity and Helena are healthy and doing well at Childrens’ NICU in Milwaukee. Their daughter Jessica is also doing well. 4) We pray for Pastor”s step-father, Carl who had surgery on his carotid artery this past Monday. He is doing well.
