Just as the world long ago needed to hear the church proclaim in an unwavering voice, Jesus Christ as Lord, crucified and risen as the payment for all sin, so also our world today needs to hear the church proclaim the same, clear, life giving message of Christ! Your brothers and sisters in Christ at Zion, and Pastor Dan. *A reminder!* Next week our service will be at 10:30am as Zion celebrates 125 years of God’s grace and blessings as a congregation. Don’t forget to set your clocks BACK 1 hour!

God’s Word has One Eternal Message! – Christ – the Life of all the World!

ZION EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH – LCMS  700 Main St.  P.O. Box 220   Clyman, WI  53016

Pastor Dan 1-(920)-341-2025 –  shepherdatzion@gmail.com

AS WE GATHER – It is easy to underestimate the darkness of the world prior to the Reformation.  It is just as easy to underestimate the darkness of sin in our world today.  In our worship today, we do not simply recall an event, but the work of God calling His Church to return to His eternal Gospel.  We proclaim with clarity that justification by grace through faith is not some Lutheran idea, but the message of Christ, affirmed by Paul and kept in trust by the Church down through the centuries as our greatest treasure.  Just as the world long ago needed to hear the Church proclaim in an unwavering voice, Jesus Christ as Lord, crucified and Risen as the payment for all sin, so also our world today needs to hear the church proclaim the same clear, life giving message of Christ, and forgiveness of sins and being justified before God is still, and always be, by grace through faith!

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn  “By Grace I’m Saved”                               LSB 566

Invocation  In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.    Amen

Confession and Absolution- O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment.  But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.    Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.   Amen.

Introit    Psalm 46; antiphon: v. 7    All: The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.  God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Men: Therefore, we will not fear though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, Women: though its waters roar and foam, and the mountains quake with their surging.  Men: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of  God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.  Women: God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.
Men: Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;  Women:  he lifts his voice, the earth melts.  All: The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.  Men: Come and see the works of the Lord, the desolations he has brought on the earth.  Women:  He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; Men:  he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, Women: he burns the shields with fire.  All: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted   among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”  The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Kyrie  In peace let us pray to the Lord.  For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.  For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.   For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

Hymn of Praise “Give Thanks…”                      LSB 806

Salutation- The Lord be with you.       And also with you.

Prayer of the Day- Almighty and gracious Lord, pour out Your Holy Spirit on Your faithful people. Keep us steadfast in Your grace and truth, protect and deliver us in times of temptation, defend us against all enemies, and grant to Your Church Your saving peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.     Amen.

The Announcement of the Day- Today we celebrate the great Reformation and reaffirm our commitment to it’s legacy of pure doctrine, and its zeal to  proclaim the same Gospel message of Christ it brought to light.  We give thanks to God for His Gospel, for the doctrine that flows from that Gospel, and for Martin Luther, who recalled the Church and its people, to its truth with such clarity and conviction.  In the First Reading from Revelation, we hear the message the Church is given to proclaim until Christ comes on the last day.  In Romans, Paul gives a clear explanation of what it means to be saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and in the Gospel of John, we are taught that we are disciples of Christ and free because we abide in His life-giving Word.

First Reading         Revelation 14:6–7 (John describes the eternal Gospel, which is to be proclaimed to all people in every corner of the earth.)  Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth–to every nation, tribe, language, and people.  He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

Epistle  Romans 3:19–28   (By grace are you saved through faith and not of yourselves.)

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.  Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.  But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.  This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.  There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.  God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.  He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished–he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.  Where, then, is boasting?  It is excluded.  On what principle? On that of observing the law?  No, but on that of faith.  For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

Verse       John 8:31-32- Alleluia.  “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  Alleluia.

Holy Gospel   John 8:31–36   (If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.)   To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone.  How can you say that we shall be set free?”  Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.  Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.  So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Nicene Creed- I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.  And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.  And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life X of the world to come.    Amen.

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22- The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Proper Preface- It is good and right for us at all times and in every place to offer You thanks and praise, O heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, for You have kept Your Word and kept Your people in Your Word so that the gates of hell shall not prevail nor Your Gospel be silenced by error or deceit. Knowing You as both just and the justifier, we join our voices with all the faithful who have gone before us with Your Church throughout the world and join the angels and archangels in praising You and singing the glory of Your name throughout all eternity:

Post-Communion Canticle – Thank the Lord

Post-Communion Thanksgiving- O God, our refuge and our strength, You raised up Your servant Martin Luther to reform and renew Your Church in the light of Your living Word, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Defend and purify the Church still today, and grant that we may boldly proclaim Christ’s faithfulness unto death and His vindicating resurrection, which You made known to those in every age who have renewed Your Church by recalling us to this eternal Gospel; through Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.        Amen.

*Sunday*-  Closing Prayer – Luther’s Morning Prayer-  I Thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that you would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You.  For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things.  Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me.  Amen

*Wednesday– Closing Prayer- Luther’s Evening Prayer- I Thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that you have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night.  For unto Your hands, I commend myself my body and soul, and all things.  Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me.  Amen

 *Announcements*

From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism:

Revelation 14:6 – “Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people.” During the Reformation, this text was used to refer to Luther’s ministry and the Lutheran message. We have an eternal Gospel to proclaim. Christ has freed us from our sins without any works on our part. We are saved by grace alone! And, ironically enough, Luther said this should make him the “apostle of works. Once we are freed by grace, we are truly free to serve God in works that flow from thankfulness and praise.

The Pewpoint – THEME OF THE DAY – The Son of God Has Set Us Free from Sin and Death by His Grace- “Wisdom is justified by her deeds” (Matt. 11:19), and the true Wisdom of God, Christ Jesus, the incarnate Son, justifies us by His deeds. He prepares His way by the preaching of repentance, but He has suffered the violence of the Law and voluntarily handed Himself over to violent men, that we might eat and drink with Him in His kingdom and “remain in the house forever” (John 8:35). For He is “a friend of tax collectors and sinners” (Matt. 11:19), and He has rescued us by His grace from the slavery of sin and death. By the proclamation of His eternal Gospel “to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people” (Rev. 14:6), “the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law” (Rom. 3:21), “that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Rom. 3:26). And by hearing the Gospel of Christ Jesus, “whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith” (Rom. 3:25), “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).
