The Kingdom Belongs to You!  O Child of God!

AS WE GATHER – “Let the children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Luke 18:16). Take these words of Jesus to heart!  No matter your age, no matter your life’s journey, when you believe in the Lord Jesus as your King and Savior, our Father in heaven sees you as His precious child!  “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God” (1 John 3:1).  Today, we come into the presence of Jesus, dear children of God!  We come at His gracious invitation, to be comforted by the assurance of His forgiveness and love.   Enjoy all the benefits of being a child of God!  His Kingdom belongs to you because of all He has done for you!

 Opening Sentences-  Pulpit:  Through faith in Jesus Christ, we are adopted as God’s sons and daughters and drawn into His kingdom.  Lectern:  By means of His Word and Holy Supper, we gather to receive our Savior’s mercy and then respond to Him in thanksgiving and praise.  

Confession and Absolution- Pastor: Because of our sins of thoughts, words, and actions, we are unworthy of the grace we receive through Christ.  All:  Therefore, at our Lord’s invitation, let us come before our heavenly Father in humility and faith, seeking His pardon for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.  Heavenly Father, we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition.  Have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life for the sake of Christ Jesus our Lord.  God be merciful to me, a sinner.  Amen.  Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Prayer of the Day- Almighty and everlasting God, You are always more ready to hear than we to pray    and always ready to give more than we either desire or deserve.  Strengthen us in the certainty of the forgiveness of sins and life everlasting in Your heavenly kingdom, that, as Your children, we may love and trust in You all our days; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.   Amen.

 Old Testament Reading              Genesis 4:1–15     (Cain and Abel bring their offerings to the Lord.)              Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.  She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.”  Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.  Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.  In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord.  But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock.  The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor.  So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.  Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry?  Why is your face downcast?  If you do what is right, will you not be accepted?  But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.”  Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”  And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.  Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”  “I don’t know,” he replied.  “Am I my brother’s keeper?”  The Lord said, “What have you done?  Listen!  Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.  Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.  When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you.  You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”  Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear.  Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”  But the Lord said to him, “Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over.”  Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.

Epistle  2 Timothy 4:6–8, 16–18   (The Lord will bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom.)   For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure.  I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day–and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.        At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.  But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it.  And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth.  The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

 Holy Gospel  Luke 18:9–17   (The kingdom of God is entered through a child-like faith!)   The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the eighteenth chapter.  Glory to You, O Lord.   

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.  The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men–robbers, evildoers, adulterers–or even like this tax collector.  I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’  “But the tax collector stood at a distance.  He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’  “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.  For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”  People were also bringing babies to Jesus to have him touch them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them.  But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.  I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”  This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed-  I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.  And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. Lord’s Prayer- Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

 Preface   2 Timothy 4:22-  The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Proper Preface-  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation.  Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally.  Because He is now risen from the dead and reigning at Your right hand, we have certainty that You, O Lord, will rescue us from every evil and bring us safely into Your heavenly kingdom. From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism: 2 Timothy 4:6 – “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.” As St. Paul nears the end of his life, he continues to view it as something to be spent in sacrifice toward God – just as he had told the Romans (12:1) to be “living sacrifices.” And why does St. Paul do this? Because he knows that His Lord has already won for him the crown of life. Jesus’ sacrifice that purchased our salvation leads us to imitate His sacrifice in our living for Him.

The Pewpoint – THEME OF THE DAY- In Humble Repentance, Faith Lives by Grace and Mercy and Is Exalted by God in Christ – Jesus tells a parable “to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous” (Luke 18:9). In this parable, the Pharisee unjustly boasted before God on the basis of his own merits, whereas the tax collector intently prayed, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” (Luke 18:13). That poor, miserable sinner trusted Christ, and he went “down to his house justified, rather than the other” (Luke 18:14). So do little children, “even infants,” come to Jesus with their need, and they “receive the kingdom of God” through faith (Luke 18:15–17). For “the one who humbles himself will be exalted,” but “everyone who exalts himself will be humbled” (Luke 18:14). That is why “the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard” (Gen. 4:4–5). St. Paul’s life, “poured out as a drink offering,” was another sacrifice like Abel’s (2 Tim. 4:6). The Lord stood by Paul and strengthened him, that “the message might be fully proclaimed” (2 Tim. 4:17). It is by that Gospel message of Christ that we “have loved his appearing” and as repentant sinners pray to “the Lord, the righteous judge” by faith (2 Tim. 6:8).
